On the ground
Japan has limited kosher infrastructure, so the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one is preparation. Depending on your cities and dates, a working plan combines prepared kosher meals, imported and carefully sourced products, and a private chef for groups, with Chabad support in the major cities. Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are the easiest to plan around; the more remote the route, the earlier it pays to start.
Is there kosher food in Japan?
Chabad houses operate in Japan's major cities and can be part of the solution for Shabbat and holiday meals, but you cannot assume certified kosher restaurants or products along a typical touring route. In practice, keeping kosher in Japan usually means prepared meals arranged in advance, a small set of reliable imported products, and a private chef where a group or a villa makes it worthwhile.
Shabbat and holidays in Japan
Shabbat and the chagim need the most planning. Challah, wine or grape juice, hot food and the meals themselves are all arranged ahead of time, and where a Chabad house or community is active in the city we coordinate with it. For groups we often set up a chef to prepare the meals in advance, so nothing depends on last-minute sourcing.
Prepared meals, imported products and a private chef
For most itineraries the backbone is prepared kosher meals delivered to your hotel, supported by imported and carefully checked products for the gaps. For families and groups a private chef gives the most flexibility, and for independent travelers we advise on what to bring versus what can be sourced on the ground - so you are not carrying a suitcase of food you did not need, or arriving without something essential.
Getting kosher food where you are going
Availability is concentrated in the major cities, so part of the work is getting food to where you will be - deliveries in Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka, or transporting prepared meals to a more remote stop. Lead time matters most here, because imported products and chef arrangements cannot be organized last minute.
